A much too short winter trip to Namibia, limited to the central western part of the country.
We made a quite long ride, in a hired Renault Duster, a very brave 4×4 vehicle for the Namibia’s gravel roads, but not necessary appropriate for off-road driving or fording, which meant sticking to the main roads only. We spent a few obligatory nights in typical African lodges and one in a town hotel, the rest was camping in managed camps, using our own normal hiking tent. We tried to avoid all-too-long car rides, so typical for Namibia, and spent a few days hiking: in dunes by Sossusvlei, in the Naukluft Mountains and in the Spitzkoppe lone mountain area. The weather was perfect, save for the usual mist on the Atlantic coast. The gravel roads were dusty, also as usual.
The loop route was: Windhoek Int. Airport — Windhoek — Rehoboth — Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch by Mariental — Mariental — Maltahöhe — Helmeringhausen — road D707 in Tirasbergen — N/a`an ku sê or Kanaan Desert Retreat — Betta — Namib Rand — Sesriem (Sossusvlei Lodge) — Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei — Sesriem — Naukluft NWR Camp, Waterkloof Trail — Büllsport — Solitaire — Kuiseb Pass and Canyon — Mirabib Camp — Walvis Bay — Swakopmund (Sam’s Giardino Hotel) — Spitzkoppe — Karibib — Etusis Lodge — Karibib — Wilhelmstal — Okahandja — Windhoek — Windhoek Int. Airport.
