Zugspitze seen from Wankle by the Eibsee, August 2017

Zugspitze, August 2017

After a visit to the top of Zugspitze, there was time left for rounding the Eibsee lake. I must admit, the famous view of the whole Wetterstein massive over the beautiful Eibsee lake from the viewpoint of Wankle, with all that islands and the woods make an impression — even when you are fully aware of the fact how strongly the surrounding is affected by civilisation.

However, climbing Zugspitze itself — shortened with a drive with Zugspitzbahn to the feet of the mountain and then in a tunnel below the top rock massive to the top-near Zugspitzplatt station — is a very specific undertaking, even when taking the well over-civilised alpine standards into account. But if you manage mentally to exclude all these buildings, installations, cables, funiculars, cranes and hundreds of people, it is a quite nice trip, especially when the weather is fine. Well, the top of Germany, anyway. Must see!
